James William Potts, JD

For nearly thirty years I have committed my professional talents toward assisting and representing employers in all aspects of human resources and business development. Contrary to public opinion, employers do not have the upper hand when it comes to dealing with employees. California, as one example, makes it very difficult for an employer to effectively operate their business. I personally take pride in the manner in which I have guided employers through the maze of legislative enactments, court decisions on the state and federal levels and opportunistic employees, to give employers a favorable chance to concentrate their efforts on the business they are engaged in.

Throughout the noted time span I have made every effort to expand my personal development. Besides having a law degree, I have also attained my Real Estate Brokers License to assist clients with their business commercial real estate needs and attended the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department academy to become a reserve deputy sheriff. Having attained the rank of Captain, I actively patrol the streets of Altadena firmly believing that each of us needs to take responsibility for the community in which we reside. Having been recognized as Reserve Deputy of the Year, I have been able to incorporate my investigative skills and knowledge of criminal law in situations confronting my clients in their respective places of business.

In 1996, I was recruited by the University of Phoenix to facilitate classes in Southern California. Having been classified as a Master Teacher, I am currently approved to teach sixteen different subject areas on the undergraduate and graduate levels that include, but are not limited to, U.S. Constitutional Law, Business Law, Enterprise Risk, Employment Law, The Legal Aspects of Supervision, Ethics, Criminal Law, and Criminal Procedure. Having been recognized as the Faculty Member of the Month, I take the responsibility of being a part of the educational system very seriously. It is my personal belief that society needs effective and committed individuals, to share knowledge thereby advancing our nation as a whole.

Recognizing the growing need to resolve workplace disputes without the necessity of litigation, I joined the ranks of retired judges, attorneys, and human resource professionals, by becoming a Certified Mediator through the Los Angeles County Bar Association. My work in this forum has permitted me to assist employers both as a mediator between parties in conflict, and a representative in the mediation and arbitration processes.
